S2 E41 - Top 3 Golden Nuggets
(feat. Keith Daniels)
SEASON 2 EPISODE 41
BACKPOCKET’S GOLDEN NUGGETS
Active social media users need to understand where cyber security currently stands. How is information protected? How is it being sold (manipulated)? Keith kicks off his response by paraphrasing how Oliver Wendall Holmes defined privacy , “The right to be left alone.” As a society, we’ve given our privacy up to the government, Facebook, Google, etc… because it’s convenient.
Keith uses the example of General Motors’s creating OnStar. They went from a car company to a technology company because of their ability to gather data through OnStar. The convenience of this feature (Google Maps and Waze included) for drivers outweighs how this feature consistently tracks our driving tendencies, so we continue to be an active user.
Similar to OnStar, Facebook is tracking everything. Let’s not forget Facebook is a free platform and all users have no obligation to be on their algorithm, yet the major of the population surrenders their user tendencies because of what Facebook offers.
One of the biggest concern’s Keith has with cyber security is outsiders comprehending who is breaking into company’s to steal their information. Cyber criminals are doing this as their 9-5. They are forced to meet quotas just like the rest of us. This is their profession. They are dropping their children off at school to go to work and try to hack into “Target”. Their are still some stereotypical hackers in the basement who are doing it out of curiosity; however, this stereotype is not the norm.
Three types of hackers in this industry are as follows… White Hat hackers are hired as penetration testing, so they try their best to identify weak points. Back Hat hackers are the people trying to make money by hacking into as many companies as possible without them finding out. Gray Hats hackers are the ones in between… sometimes they are in it for the money, and other times they are for increasing safety.
Thanksgiving Talk! The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is an all out reunion, and widely known (expect for Declan) as Drinks-giving. Andrew claims it’s the highest DUI rate. A statistic from lifesaver.com further backs this claim by stating, “Thanksgiving weekend is the most traveled holiday period of the year with almost 90% of those traveling doing so by car.”
What is Andrew thankful for this Thanksgiving? Uptown because of the new Minnesota vibes. There is a big difference between St. Thomas and Uptown. The new culture is uplifting and exciting.
What is Declan thankful for this Thanksgiving? Opportunities. This is DEEP, so please sit down before continuing. For 41 straight weeks, The Backpocket has released a Monday podcast. Every situation is a different opportunity, and every day we try to seize those opportunities. Very thoughtful Declan!
What is Sam thankful for this Thanksgiving? Sam claims he is not allowed to be thankful because he is getting on a flight to Nashville to meet up with his buddy to then drive down to Tuscaloosa for the Iron Bowl (Alabama vs Auburn). Sam is choosing football over family. His justification… there’s always Christmas.
